In 2007, I pressed play on a show that would change the way I saw myself: Heroes.
Created by Tim Kring, the series wasn’t just another sci-fi drama. It was a meditation on human evolution, destiny, and the hidden powers within us all.
Ordinary people around the world suddenly discovered extraordinary gifts: healing, flight, mind reading, time travel, and realized they were being pulled into something larger than themselves.
The opening narration, spoken by Mohinder Suresh, still echoes in my soul:
“You do not choose your destiny; it chooses you.”
At the time, I was 28 years old, right in the middle of my Saturn return, a cosmic initiation point when life strips you bare and reveals who you’re meant to become. That’s when my own gifts began to surface.
Watching the show I realized: “I am not crazy, I am gifted!”
DNA Activation: Fiction Meets Reality
In Heroes, much of the story revolves around DNA and evolution. The idea is that human beings are coded for more, and one day, those hidden codes “switch on.”
For me, watching the show felt like remembering something I already knew. It was as if my own DNA was whispering:
You too have gifts. Pay attention.
Shortly after, I started experiencing psychic awareness:
I could feel people’s emotions in my body.
I often knew what someone was thinking without them saying a word.
Low-vibrational environments, like the government office where I worked, left me drained and overwhelmed.
Like the characters in the show, I didn’t yet have control, I just knew something had awakened.
The Gifts We Carry
Each Heroes character reflects an archetypal spiritual gift:
Claire Bennet: Cellular regeneration (healing, rebirth).
Hiro Nakamura: Time manipulation (vision, destiny navigation).
Matt Parkman: Telepathy (hearing thoughts, clairsentience).
Isaac Mendez: Painting the future (clairvoyance, artistic channeling).
Peter Petrelli: Absorbing others’ powers (empathy, mirror soul).
In real life, spiritual gifts can look different but feel just as powerful:
Clairvoyance (visions, symbolic dreams)
Clairaudience (inner voices, spiritual sounds)
Clairsentience (feeling emotions/energy)
Mediumship (connecting with spirits/ancestors)
Energy healing (hands, presence, vibration)
Telepathy & empathy (mind–heart connection)
Channeling (divine wisdom through speech/writing)
Why It’s Overwhelming at First
Much like the show, my first reaction wasn’t wow, I’m special! but how do I handle this?
I didn’t yet know how to set boundaries, so I absorbed everything, especially negativity and complaints. Many of us with gifts go through this stage of confusion, exhaustion, and even fear.
It’s part of the training: learning that power without grounding can feel more like a burden than a blessing.
A Decade of Integration
After that first activation, it took nearly 10 years before I stepped into my calling as a professional medium and spiritual adviser. In those years, I was surrounded by other gifted people, mirrors, who inspired me to go deeper. That community reminded me that these abilities aren’t fantasy, they’re part of who we are as human beings evolving.
How to Discover Your Own Gift
If you’ve ever felt that Heroes-like pull, that sense that something is hidden inside you, here are steps to explore:
Pay attention to your obsessions. If you’re magnetized by certain stories, symbols, or shows (Heroes, X-Men, etc.), your soul is giving you a clue.
Keep a gift journal. Write down your dreams, synchronicities, and intuitive hits.
Notice what you sense first. Do you “see” images, “hear” voices, or “feel” emotions?
Track energy drains. Overwhelm often reveals sensitivity.
Look into your cosmic map. Astrology (especially Saturn return) and numerology often point to gifts.
Find your tribe. Being around other sensitives activates your own gifts.
Trust your destiny. Remember the Heroes truth: you don’t choose it, it chooses you.
From Screen to Soul
Tim Kring once said that Heroes was about ordinary people realizing they were extraordinary. That message resonated because it wasn’t just fiction. It was prophecy.
When I watched the show, it wasn’t just a story on screen. It was my DNA waking up. It was destiny tapping me on the shoulder. It was one of the beginnings of a path that would lead me to my own purpose as a medium and spiritual teacher.
And if you’re reading this, maybe it’s tapping you too.
Because your gifts aren’t random. They’re written into your soul.
Love, Mara
